Early Years Curriculum

International Preschool at ISSP

Your child’s first experiences of school are the key to laying the foundation for a successful learning journey. It is therefore crucial that these early experiences are positive and developmentally appropriate.

Run by our highly specialized teachers, the Early Years program in ISSP delivers a balanced curriculum that focuses on the development of both the interpersonal and academic skills of the child. It is well-aligned with our dominant pedagogy which is the IB PYP Framework.

PLAY-BASED LEARNING IN THE EARLY YEARS

In the Early Years, we see play as the primary driver for guided inquiry. This reflects the holistic and authentic way in which children explore, grow, and learn. At ISSP, play involves choice, promotes agency, and provides opportunities to inquire into important concepts and personal interests.

Inquiring through play in the Early Years supports the notion that learning is an active process. To provide this we work hard at creating healthy learning environments and forming supportive relationships.
When these elements are in place, children in the Early Years Program at ISSP respond with curiosity, imagination, creativity, and agency.

As their skills evolve, Early Years learners develop a positive sense of identity to interact, reflect, and contribute to their own and others’ learning and development in the Early Years and beyond. Well-planned, play-based learning is inquiry and it is through play that children in the Early Years program at ISSP learn about who they are and how they connect to those around them.

As this learning process evolves through individual and collaborative inquiry with peers, the students build upon their prior knowledge, and their skill development and become more sophisticated young learners.

HOW THE IB PYP INFORMS THE EARLY YEARS PROGRAM

Developing a love for learning

Based on an understanding that Guided Inquiry shapes the majority of learning and teaching at ISSP, in our Early Years program we recognize students as being actively involved in their own learning and as agents for taking responsibility for that learning.

To further enhance this and initiate the development of International Mindedness in our Early Years program, guided by the IB Learner Profile, our teachers are skilled at:

  • Nurturing curiosity and promoting enthusiasm for life-long learning
  • Helping young children to think, to challenge and extend their ideas and to reflect and take meaningful Action.
  • Ensuring that inquiry is purposeful and authentic.
  • Supporting children in achieving personal and shared goals
  • Give opportunities to the Early Years learners to become critical and creative thinkers, researchers, collaborators and communicators.

Motor Skill Development

Highlighted by the Smart Steps Program

It is important for young children to learn how to move their bodies with coordination and balance. Aside from the variety of unstructured free play, students in the Early Years are also offered a structured Physical Education (PE) program which reinforces the development of their gross motor skills.

Nurturing Creativity and Self-expression

in our specialist arts classrooms

Starting at 18 months old, students in the Early Years begin a rich journey in the visual arts through their exploration of colors, textures, and other art elements. Offering a variety of art activities also helps young children to develop their fine motor skills that are essential to perform daily tasks such as buttoning, zipping, using utensils, or wearing shoes. This creative journey continues with music opportunities delivered in specialized music classrooms, where students cultivate their self-expression, imagination, and confidence.

After-school Activities

Over 12 enrichment opportunities

Our extensive After School Activities (ASAs) Program allows our students to explore their talents and enhance their creative, cultural, and athletic capacities with like-minded students. For the Early Years level, there are over 15 engaging activities specialized for young children. The common bonds and friendships created in these groups form the basis of ISSP’s close-knit community and rich school culture.
